Virginia Nicolaides

Virginia Driscoll Nicolaides
March 26, 1924 - October 31, 2014
Virginia Driscoll Nicolaides, 90, passed away peacefully at the Stewart Health Center, The Cypress of Charlotte, on October 31, 2014.

Mrs. Nicolaides was born in Albany, New York, where she graduated from The Vincentian Institute School and The University at Albany. Mrs. Nicolaides was married to Professor John D. Nicolaides for almost 52 years before his death in 1999. In addition to supporting his work in aerodynamics, she was an American Red Cross "gray lady" volunteer, president of the Ladies of Notre Dame where her husband was on the faculty, and president of the Children's Home Society in San Luis Obispo, California. She was an avid golfer, traveler, and lifelong Catholic.

Mrs. Nicolaides was devoted to her only child, Kathleen Nicolaides, and only grandson, John Murdter. She moved from California to Charlotte in 2002 to be with them. Up until she was 84, she could be found in the carpool pick up at Providence Day School doing her most rewarding volunteer job taking care of her grandson. Mrs. Nicolaides is survived by her daughter, Kathleen, Kathleen's husband Mike Rader, and her grandson, John Murdter.

For the past two years she resided on the second floor of the Stewart Health Center, where she received extraordinary care and attention from the staff. The family wishes to thank all members and staff of The Cypress, Hospice of Charlotte, Fr. Mark Lawlor and her caregiver, Josie Bowman.

A memorial service will be held in The Clubhouse of The Cypress of Charlotte 4:00 p.m. Monday, November 3, 2014. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte or to St. Vincent de Paul Church.
