Gerald "Jerry" Grogin of Pineville, died Monday, January 27, 2014, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Charlotte Longworth
Martha Charlotte Leigh Arnold Longworth, 89, passed away Saturday night January 25, 2014 at Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte following a prolonged illness. She was born in Forsyth County on August 7, 1924 to Bertha Reavis Arnold and George Washington Arnold.
Charlotte attended grade school in Yadkin County and graduated from Gray High School in Winston-Salem (now part of the UNC School of the Arts), where she excelled in writing, and was a fierce competitor in sports, particularly soccer and basketball. Her high school nickname was "Tot", because she was the "Tallest On the Team". She also served on the Gray High school Publicity and Traffic committees.
She was married to James Lephoe Longworth of Winston-Salem on August 9, 1941,and they remained together until his death in June of 2010.
After living at Carolina Beach during World War II, then briefly in Baltimore, Maryland, Charlotte and James settled in Winston-Salem, where they would remain until retiring to Charlotte in 2005.
Mrs. Longworth worked for the Wilber Kinsey movie theatre company in the late 1940's, then became a full time homemaker until 1968, when she went to work for Hunter Publishing in Winston-Salem. While at Hunter, she edited thousands of high school and college yearbooks, some from as far away as Spain. She also served as an instructor for new hires. She retired from the company in 1988.
Charlotte was active in community organizations and served on the local Board of the American Cancer Society, where she was a tireless fundraiser. She was also active in the Republican Party, first as a member of the Young Republicans, and later serving as an impartial election judge and registrar.
Charlotte and her husband James taught Sunday School at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem for over 25 years, where they innovated a number of teaching methods, including educational materials for blind students. She also served on the Altar Guild and as a Choir Mother, and supported Children's Ministries.
Affectionately known as "Honey" by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and close friends, Charlotte was a good listener, and loved to engage in discussions about politics and current affairs. In her final years, Charlotte rekindled her long time interest in and talent for crafts by creating custom jewelry for family and friends.
Mrs. Longworth is preceded in death by her parents Bertha and George Arnold, her husband of 69 years James Lephoe Longworth, brothers Bill and George Arnold, and sister Peggy Jean Arnold. She is survived by her daughter Linda Couch (Charles) of Charlotte, and a son, James L. Longworth, Jr. (Pam) of Kernersville; and by four grandchildren: Trip Couch (Tiffany) of Sugarland, Texas, Kimberly Hanson (Greg) of Charlotte, Kevin Couch (Holly) of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Ashley Couch of Mesa, Arizona; and by several great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
She is also survived by her sister Mary Doris Creedmore of Statesville, and by nieces Dawn Kouba, Marsha Skjaerris, Kathy Nyerges (Alex), and Angela Arnold, and by a nephew Robert A. Arnold (Mona).
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 4, at 12:30 PM, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. The family will receive guests at a reception in the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte NC 28204, or to the American Cancer Society, 1900 South Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Samual Howard
Samuel Murray Howard of Charlotte, NC died peacefully of natural causes at the Levine Dixon Hospice House in Huntersville last Wednesday, January 22 at the age of 92.
Mr. Howard was born on October 22, 1921 to the late Rupert Baxter and Ethel Stewart Howard. Murray was the youngest of five children and the last surviving member of his immediate family. After attending schools in Derita and Newell, North Carolina, he joined the service in September of 1942. Mr. Howard, a member of the Army Air Corps 845th Engineer Aviation Battalion was a heavy equipment operator and built airfields in Italy; Rome-Arno campaign, Naples and Foggia Italy, southern France, North Apennines, and ended the war in Germany; the Rhineland and PO Valley campaign. He returned to the United States in October of 1945. After the war, Mr. Howard had a long career as a manager for the Mecklenburg County ABC Board where he retired.
Marrying Edna Bartlett in 1951, Murray and Edna were together 36 years before her death in 1987. Mr. Howard is survived by four grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and two great-great-nephews. He is also survived by Babe IV; the latest in a long line of dachshunds all of whom were named "Babe". Murray has found his new home in heaven and Babe has found a new home with family friends.
A graveside service was held on Monday, January 27 at 2:00 PM at Sharon Memorial Park with the Reverend Patience Brumley officiating.

Henry Furr
Henry Bryan Furr, 74, born September 8, 1939, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014, at the Golden Living Center.
He was born in Charlotte, N.C. on September 8, 1939, to the late Henry Sloan Furr and Mary Mullis Furr. He was a 1957 graduate of Harding High School, marrying Jeanette Wood also from Harding. They have two sons, Richard who is married to Marites who has one son, Mateo; and Bryan, Jr., who is married to Jule Matthews; they have one son, Christian, and one daughter, Jordan.
After his retirement as a real estate broker, Bryan spent many peaceful hours with a fishing rod in his hand. Left to cherish his memories are Jeanette, who remained faithful, taking care of Bryan through sickness and pain; his two sons and their families; a brother, Johnny and his wife, Beverly; three sisters and their families, Brenda Watson and her husband, Stan, Sandee Kiser and Tammy Coyle and her husband, Peter, and other nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service was held at The Seventh Day Adventist Church, 920 N. Sharon Amity Rd., Charlotte, NC. on Sunday, February 9th at 2:00 pm.
James Wolfe
James Russell Wolfe, 78, of Charlotte, NC passed away at his home on Saturday, January 11, 2014.
He was born in Indian Land, SC on October 23, 1935, to Lucille Ashley Wolfe and the late James Richard Wolfe, Jr.
Jim worked with Kimbrell's Furniture Distributing Company until his retirement. Jim is survived by his mother, and sister, Janie Wolfe Rea and husband, Ralph. He is also survived by two nieces, Kelly Rea Chiseck and husband, Billy and their children Isabel, Avery & Olivia, and Ashley Rea Bolick and husband Brett and their children, Kinsey and Ethan. One uncle, Walter H. Wolfe and several cousins all of the Charlotte area.
Jim was a kind and gentle soul who will be missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service to celebrate his life was held at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church cemetery on Hwy. 160, Indian Land, SC, on Monday, January 20th at 2:00 PM. All were invited to come, dress casual and warm. Rev. Elaine Treece will conduct the service.
Jeane Dennis
Jeane Aiken Daniel Dennis, 74, of Pineville, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 after a six month battle with brain cancer.
Jeane was born on April 29, 1939 in Durham, NC to the late Susan Aiken Daniel and Aubrey Clark Daniel. She graduated from Durham High School and attended Wake Forest University where she was a member of the String Society, and the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. After three years in Miami, Jeane spent eleven years in Raleigh, before moving with her three children to Wilmington, where she worked as a legal secretary and then at General Electric.
Jeane made a good life for herself, and in turn, made a great life for her children. She retired from GE in 2001 and moved to Pineville to be closer to family. Jeane enjoyed retirement to the fullest. She was an active member of Providence Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School class. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, playing canasta, cooking and eating good Southern food and following her grandchildren's academic, artistic and athletic pursuits. She loved watching Carolina Panthers games and any and all Wake Forest athletic events.
Jeane was devoted to her family and her many friends. She had a passion for life, a quick smile, a keen sense of humor and was ever the optimist. She loved the Lord and even when times were tough, her faith remained strong. Over the past three years, while fighting two different cancers, Jeane could often be seen wearing her "Choose Joy" necklace.
Jeane is survived by three children; Kimberly Dennis Powell and husband, David, of Charlotte, Jeffrey Todd Dennis and wife, Donna, of Raleigh and Kevin O'Neal Dennis of Charlotte, as well as three grandchildren who were the joys of her life; Hunter Clark Powell and Lindsey Burnette Powell of Charlotte and Jakob Lawrence Dennis of Raleigh. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Daniel Ellwanger and husband, Scott, of Charlotte, and a niece, Susan Ellwanger and a nephew, Chris Ellwanger and their families.
The family would like to thank Dr. Andrea McGrath, Dr. Jennie Hauschka, Dr. Robert Higgins, Dr. William Bobo, Dr. Tony Asher, Dr. Daniel Haggstrom, their staffs and the many people associated with the Levine Cancer Institute for the excellent care that was given to Jeane during her illness. Thanks also to the wonderful people of Bayada Home Health, Hospice and to Sandra Wilkins for their devoted care over the past several months.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 on Saturday, January 11 at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte. A memorial service in celebration of Jeane's life was held at 3:30 on Saturday, January 11 at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Road, Charlotte. The family received friends at the church following the service. Rose Hodges
Rose Marie Bozart Hodges of Charlotte, N.C. was received into the arms of her Lord and Savior in the early hours of Wednesday morning, January 8th following a brief battle with congestive heart failure.
She was the second oldest of five children born to Benton F. and Roselle "Rosie" Bozart of Garner, N.C. A 1954 graduate of Garner High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Charles F. Hodges, on November 25, 1955. She has supported him in Christian ministry as a constant companion for 58 years. During their early years she was the church pianist wherever they ministered and from 1994 to retirement in 2002 she was First Lady to Florida Baptist Children's Homes while her husband served as President of that statewide childcare institution.
Since retiring the Hodges' returned from Florida to their native state and to Charlotte in 2005 to be near their son, William C. "Bill" Hodges with Duke Energy, daughter-in-law Renee, a paralegal, and grandchildren Samantha, a senior at UNC Chapel Hill, J.T. Harder, a junior at UNC Charlotte, and Charlie, a high school senior. She is also survived by her sister, Janice Bozart Smith of Charleston, S.C., niece Kim Smith Rentz of Charleston, brother Robert F. Bozart of Raleigh, NC and a host of friends across several states.
She was an active member of University Hills Baptist Church in Charlotte and enjoyed helping plan for senior adult events and returning to the piano for Wednesday night services. She was a member of the Lewis Walker Bible Study group.
A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 with visitation beginning at 12:15 pm at University Hills Baptist Church with Dr. Coye Still, III officiating. Burial followed at Gethsemane Memorial Park
