Ray Selvey
Ray Ernest Selvey, age 91, passed away
April 28, 2014.
Mr. Selvey was born July 19, 1922, in Charlotte, son of the late Myrtle Johnson Selvey and Newton Augustus Selvey. Ray was an active member of Parkwood ARP Church, and later New Covenant ARP Church for over 60 years. He taught Sunday school, enjoyed singing in the choir and served as an elder and deacon. He also served on several church boards.
He graduated from Charlotte Technical High School. He was particularly proud of his service to his country. Ray served in the Army in World War II and later in the Korean War. He served in the National Guard and left the service as a 1st Lieutenant. Upon leaving military service he worked as a transportation salesman and sales manager until his retirement.
He was married to his childhood sweetheart, Doris Taylor Selvey for almost 68 years. In addition to his wife Doris, Ray is survived by Lynn Salls, Margaret Griffin, Steve Selvey and wife Judy, Scott Selvey and wife Tessa; grandchildren Kristen Selvey Yancey, Brandon Selvey and Lauren Selvey. He was blessed to have three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Brian Center Concord for their loving care.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, May 2nd, at Central United Methodist Church, 30 Union St. N., Concord, NC. Visitation with the family will begin at 11:00 followed by a memorial service at 11:30. Pastor Andy Langford will officiate.

Nell Armstrong
Ms. Armstrong died April 24, 2014. Memorial services were held at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 28th at Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia, NC.

Lois Skilton, 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 17, in Charlotte, NC after a brief illness. Lois lived in Charlotte for the past seven years where she enjoyed many happy moments with "the southern family."
Born in Mineola, NY on July 31, 1920, to Charles and Elna Turner, Lois graduated from New Lebanon High School near her hometown of Stephentown, NY. She graduated from Albany Business College and started work at Montgomery Wards in Albany where she met her future husband, Steve. After their marriage, they moved to North Conway, NH, where they both worked for Carroll Reed Ski Shops until their retirements in 1987. Steve and Lois enjoyed 42 years together before his passing in 1992. In 1993, Lois moved to Waitsfiled, VT and spent 14 wonderful years with "the northern family." While in Vermont, Lois volunteered at the Joslin Memorial Library and attended St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church.
Lois will be remembered by her whit, sharp mind, and many winning bridge hands.
She is survived by her son Steve and wife Nancy, of Waitsfield, VT; grandchildren, Anna and Tanner; her son Peter and wife Susan, of Charlotte; and grandchildren, Paige and Eric.
A graveside service will be held in Kearsarge at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Joslin Memorial Library, 4391 Main Street, Waitsfield, VT 05673, in honor of Lois's service and devotion to the library and her love of reading.

Toney Carter
Toney Allen Carter, 62, died April 19, 2014, at home with his wife by his side.
Toney was born in Gaston County on August 2, 1951, to the late George A. and Gertrude G. Carter.
He was a longtime volunteer and advocate for people with disabilities. He enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, and woodworking.
His survivors include his wife, Christine "Chris" Carter of McAdenville and his son, Mark Allen Carter of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Willis Carter and Ted Lemuel Carter.

James Schwartz
Mr. James Schwartz died April 11, 2014. Jim was an avid golfer, loved life and will be memorialized in future Scotland Golf trips where he loved to play.
Ellen Hanna
Ellen Goforth Hanna, age 67, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Presbyterian Medical Center - Main.
She was born in Charlotte, March 17, 1947, to the late Clyde Duff Goforth, Jr. and Ellen (Tiny) Waddill Goforth.
Ellen graduated from Myers Park High School in 1965 - go Mustangs!! She attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. She was a member of the Junior League of Charlotte, the Charlotte Assembly Debutante Club and the Mecklenburg Hounds Equestrian Club.
She is survived by her siblings and their families; Duff and Cindy Goforth, Berry and Sheldon Grant and David Goforth; as well as her friend and long-time companion, Tom Cramer.

Mrs. Bumgardner died April 7, 2014 at Sunrise on Providence. Services were privately held.
Frances Holland
Frances Kelly Holland, age 92, died Thursday April 3, 2014, in Charlotte.
Mrs. Holland was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Mount Holly, to the late Ernest Dexter Kelly, Sr. and Bula McIntosh Kelly. She graduated from Mount Holly High School in 1938, and she received a Bachelor of Music degree from Greensboro College in 1942. On Aug. 27, 1944, she married the love of her life, Thomas Holland. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Mrs. Holland was a skillful and dedicated musician who used her talents to enhance Christian worship. She had great respect for Johann Sebastian Bach when he wrote "Soli Deo Gloria," to the glory of God alone. For Frances Holland, music was an integral part of her witness for Jesus Christ. Mrs. Holland was known for the quality of her musicianship. Her aptitude for music was apparent early in her life. She began playing for school chapel services in the fifth grade. At age 13, she played for worship services at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Holly. Mrs. Holland was a piano and organ teacher, organist, and choir director for over 50 years.
Through the years, she continued her education on many workshop programs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, Montreat Music Conference, and Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. A few months ago, at the age of 92 years, Mrs. Holland played the piano for an hour at a reception at Sharon Towers retirement community. She loved to play the piano while her great-grandchildren danced to her music. Mrs. Holland served as the organist and choir director at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Holly for a number of years. In 1953, she moved to a similar position at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Holly, where she served until her retirement in 1984. After her retirement, she substituted as organist at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. In 1959, Mrs. Holland was elected as the first woman dean of the Charlotte Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She served as hospitality chairman for that organization for 22 years. She was certified as an organist by the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. At the Mount Holly Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Holland was a Circle Chairman and also President of the Presbyterian Women of the Church. She also served on the coordination council of the Concord Presbytery. In 1960 and 1961, she was president of the Women's Auxiliary of the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association. In 1961, Mrs. Holland was chosen as Woman of the Year in Mount Holly.
In 2007, she and her husband moved from Mount Holly to Sharon Towers retirement community in Charlotte. As a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, she also belonged to the Fellowship Sunday School Class and Susanna Circle. Her special hobby was sending cards and birthday greetings to many people.
Mrs. Holland was preceded in death by her brother, Ernest Dexter Kelly, Jr. and her sister, Inez Kelly Kuhn. She is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Thomas Marshall Holland, of Charlotte; daughter, Camille Holland Carruth and her husband, Dr. Joseph E. Carruth, of Dublin, Ga.; son, Willis Marshall (Bucky) and his wife, Christine Hiestand Holland, of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren, Rev. Thomas Willis Carruth and wife, Shelly, Elizabeth Carruth Barfoot and husband, Adam, Carrie Lynn Holland, Lauren Anna Holland, and Craig Wellman Bode and wife, Karen; six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday April 5, 2014, at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Joan H. Watson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Music Dept., Covenant Presbyterian Church, and 1000 E. Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or to Residence Assistance Fund, Sharon Towers, 5100 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Katherine McAdams
Katherine McAdams was born Feb. 13, 1930, in Clearwater, Florida, the only child of Clyde James Kilgore and Leslie Bailey Kilgore. She died April 1, 2014, at her home in Charlotte of lung cancer.
She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and Women's College in Greensboro. She taught home economics at Meadow High School in Benson.
She married John Luther Gould Jr. July 18, 1953. She and Jack raised their three daughters in Charlotte. Summers were spent at their Lake Norman house, swimming, sailing and water skiing. Katherine and her daughters were active in Girl Scout Troop 280 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. She led trips to Disney World, sailing in the Bahamas, canoeing in the Everglades, Quantico Boundary Waters and local rivers and lakes. She was widowed Jan. 31, 1972.
Katherine married Rick McAdams Nov. 26, 1977. Together they enjoyed snow skiing and traveling. As members of Friendship Force and Sister Cities they visited Germany, Denmark, New Zealand and Kyrgyzstan. Katherine was an active member of the Mecklenburg Historical Association (docent), American Association of University Women and Women's Circle at church. She was an avid reader and member of several book clubs. She was also a member of a Park Lanes bowling team for many years and spent many hours solving crossword puzzles and researching her genealogy.
She is survived by her husband James Richard McAdams, daughters Margaret Gould Johnson (Gene Johnson), Katherine Gould Bond (David Gower) (Jeffrey H. Bond) and Susan Gould Love (Douglas Love), step-daughter Virginia Lynn McAdams Thompson (John P. Thompson), step-son Richard Holt McAdams (Anna Maria Marshall), grandchildren Michael Scott Johnson, Jeffrey Wade Johnson, Alexander Joel Bond (Jessica R. Bond), Ian Gould Bond (Jessica L. Bond), Lindsay Laura Gould, N. Taylor Thompson, Joshua P. Thompson, B. Caleb Thompson, and great-grandchildren; Aiden Lukas Bond and Scarlett Rose Love. Katherine loved her many animal companions; Nellie, her horse, dogs; Lou, Max, Gretel, Belle and Francy and cats; Pansy, Sam and Moxie.

A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, April 6, at 3 PM at St. Stephens United Methodist Church, 6800 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC. Donations in Katherine's memory can be made to the Hornets' Nest Girl Scout Council, American Association of University Women and Mecklenburg Historical Association.
