Edward McElhaney

Edward "Joe" McElhaney passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Novant Presbyterian Hospital.

He was born Dec. 5, 1937, to the late Hazel Lawrence McElhaney and Sadie Louise Wallace McElhaney. Joe graduated from Harding High School in 1955. He served in the Air National Guard. Joe retired from the Charlotte Fire Department having served faithfully over 30 years. During his service Joe ended his career as Division Chief. Joe was a member of Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was active with Boy Scout Troop 51.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Jean McElhaney and brother, William Hazel McElhaney. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Melinda Shook and children, Ledane Poplin and Chad Poplin. He is also survived by one brother, Marshall Lawrence McElhaney of Mount Holly and several nieces and a nephew.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church, 3413 Mt. Holly Huntersville Road with Reverend T.J. Thompson officiating. Visitation will be held immediately following the service.

Gordon Corbitt

Gordon Ken Corbitt passed away on February 25th, 2014.

He has lived in Charlotte since 1997 and has been a member of Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte. He was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where his father Gordon Paige Corbitt was a principal and his mother Pauline Gaston Corbitt was a teacher. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in Engineering and worked at GE and various other companies before getting his Masters in Library Science from the University of South Carolina. He is the father of Warren Corbitt and Bryan Corbitt of New York City. He leaves behind his friend Judy Reynolds.

David Hanna

David Hanna died February 25, 2014 at Carolinas Medical Center - Main.  There were no local services.

Kenny Cline

Kenny W. Cline, 60, of Charlotte left this earth on Feb. 21, 2014 to go to his new home with God his Father and Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior, and is now in heaven walking and singing with the heavenly choir.

Kenny dearly loved music and loved all types of music from gospel to rap and hip-hop. After graduating from Olympic high school in 1971, Kenny started in the music business as a sound man and backup singer traveling extensively with a number of groups including "Southern Cross" and "Swing", his favorite group. Kenny decided to get out of the music business and become a commercial electrician (and there was not a better one!), working for Moore Electric, Port City Electric, and Starr Electric until he became disabled and could no longer work.

Kenny was a member of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church and he loved his church! He was a member of the Billie Watt Sunday school class and he loved that class so much because he always felt like he was so loved and learned so much from his brothers and sisters in Christ there. He ran the church sound board for many years, served as an Elder and Deacon, taught Sunday school, served on various committees, but his highlight was singing in the church choir. Oh, how he loved to sing with the beautiful tenor voice God gave him because it gave him such joy to sing for the Lord and he sang as long as he could until his health failed. Kenny also sang with a special group of men called "The Disciples" and he loved singing with them too as long as he was able.

Kenny was a true inspiration to everyone who knew him and will be missed so much.

Kenny was predeceased by his loving parents, Howard W. Cline and Lillie Willis Cline, but he is living in peace and joy with them now. Praise God! Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Karen James Cline, his loving daughter, Shannon D. Malone and husband Brian, and the four special blessings of his life, his grandchildren, MacKenzie, Brian Jr, Kuyler, and Caydence Malone whom he loved so very much, his loving brother Gary E. Cline and wife Kathleen and son Chris all of whom Kenny dearly loved and many brother and sister in-laws, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

After Kenny's parents passed away he had two special parents, Karen's Mom and Dad, Norma James and Eugene James whom he loved so much and we just want to say a special "thank you" to them for all their help over the years after Kenny became so sick. We couldn't have made it without you two!

Kenny's memorial service was held at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 1st at 11:00 with a reception afterward in the Family Life Center. Interment was held before the service at 10:30 in the church cemetery. Reverend Valerie Phillips and Reverend Jeff Pinkston officiated.

Mrs. Bowers died February 26, 2014 at Aldersgate Retirement Community.  No local services were held.

Mrs. Smith died February 24, 2014 at Levine and Dickson - Southminster.  No local services were held.

Nancy Schumacher

Nancy G. Schumacher, born on June 23, 1934, in Buffalo, New York, passed away on Feb. 23, 2014, after a short illness.

Her family will always remember her as a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was happily married for over 58 years to Robert H. Schumacher. She is survived by her husband, her four sons, Thomas (Dales), Robert (Fang), William and James (Deed) as well as 13 grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence O. Garretson, her mother, Elizabeth R. Garretson, her brother Alan Garretson, and one grandchild.

A Memorial service was held at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 3, 2014, in the Forest Lawn Cemetery Chapel in Buffalo, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of the donor's choice.

Virginia FitzHenry

Virginia Fuller FitzHenry "Ginger", 80, of Charlotte, passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Golden Living Center. 

She was born in Keeling, Virginia, on Nov. 11, 1933, and was the daughter of the late William H. and Amelia Fuller of Virginia. She graduated from Hampton High School in 1952 and played on their softball team with her sisters. She was the wife of the late Daryl W. FitzHenry. Virginia worked as a bookkeeper at Dixie Electric Company. She was a member of Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church and was an active member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Amy FitzHenry (Ken Martin) and grandchildren, Alexia and Blake Martin; son Darren FitzHenry (Roxanne) and grandchildren, William and Andrew FitzHenry. She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret (Avram) Rubin of California, Barbara Knight of Ohio and Sandra Fuller of Virginia; and her brother William (Florence) Fuller of Virginia and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service for Virginia this summer in Hampton, Virginia.

Katarina Kalavros

Mrs. Kalavros died  February 21, 2015 at White Oak Manor.  A service was held at St. Philip Neri Church in Charlotte.

Ronald Mullis

Mr. Mullis died February 19, 2015 in Charlotte, NC.  There will be no local services.

Myron Cole

Myron Cole died February 19, 2015 in Charlotte, NC.  Arrangements will be held at a later date.

George Barber

George Edward Barber, lll, Mount Pleasant died Feb. 17, 2014.

Born Oct. 8, 1937, George was the beloved son of the late Miriam F. and George E. Barber, Jr. He was raised in Charlotte, N.C., attending Dilworth, Alexander Graham and Myers Park High. He remained a Charlottean through his 2006 retirement, until moving to Mount Pleasant in 2012.

He is survived by his brother, Freeman Barber and wife Susan, his niece, Garrett Rust and husband Trey and their children, Lila and Shaw, his nephew Freeman Barber, Jr. and wife Margaret and their children Freeman, lll and Hunt, all of Mount Pleasant, and his step-niece, Steele Trotter, of Charleston. \

George's family extends heartfelt thanks to the staffs of The Palms of Mount Pleasant, Home Instead Senior Care and Carolina Hospice Care.

Graveside services were held at Forest Lawn West, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, at 1PM February 20.

Eleanor Evers

Mrs. Evers died February 14, 2014 at Charlotte Square.  Arrangements will be private.

Mr. Brouillette died February 12, 2014 at his residence.  Arrangements will be privately held by the family.

Mrs. Melton died February 12, 2014 at Caromont Hospital.  Arrangements will be announced by the family.

Ben Selby

Mr. Selby died on February 11 at Carolinas Medical Center - Main.  Service will be privately held.

Francis Stewart

Mrs. Steward died February 12, 2014 at The Stewart Health Care Center of The Cypress.

A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Greenville, SC with a Memorial Service to follow at Myers Park Baptist Church announced at a later date.

June Comer

Mrs. Comer died February 10, 2014.  Arrangements are being announced by the family.

Diana Greene Ison

Diana G. Ison, 76, passed away at home from complications of lung cancer early Monday morning, February 10, 2014.

Mrs. Ison was preceded in death by her husband Wade H. Ison III and together they had four children, their spouses and eight grandchildren: Virginia Ison Knox, Wade H. & Donna Ison IV& their 4 children, Kenni I. & Andy Setzer & David Miller Ison. Her older grandchildren are Robert Taylor Knox, III & Miles David Hampton Knox; Hunter Payne & Peyton Spencer Setzer. 

Mrs. Ison was an acclaimed, published illustrator and the owner of an award winning advertising agency. She attended Queens College where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She had been a Rainbow Girl, a member of the Junior League, the Daughters of the American Revolution, & the Symphony Guild.

Diana was a cherished friend & much loved mother.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 24th at 11:30 am at St. Peters Episcopal Church at 7th & Tryon Streets with a reception immediately following the service.

Memorials may be made to Hospice or a visual arts organization of your choice.

Charles Campbell

Charles Lester Campbell, 79, of Matthews, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014.

Charles was born Nov. 28, 1934, in Charlotte. He was a science teacher in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties, active member of his church, church deacon, and devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Charles loved to study the bible and did extensive research on biblical prophecy.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Christine. He is survived by his two children, Kim Harden and husband Bill, of Matthews, and Chip Campbell and wife Becky, of Concord. He also leaves two sisters, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of the Charlotte area.

Visitation will be held at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte at 6 p.m. on Feb. 10, with the Memorial Service at 7 p.m.
