Edward "Joe" McElhaney passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Novant Presbyterian Hospital.
He was born Dec. 5, 1937, to the late Hazel Lawrence McElhaney and Sadie Louise Wallace McElhaney. Joe graduated from Harding High School in 1955. He served in the Air National Guard. Joe retired from the Charlotte Fire Department having served faithfully over 30 years. During his service Joe ended his career as Division Chief. Joe was a member of Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was active with Boy Scout Troop 51.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Jean McElhaney and brother, William Hazel McElhaney. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Melinda Shook and children, Ledane Poplin and Chad Poplin. He is also survived by one brother, Marshall Lawrence McElhaney of Mount Holly and several nieces and a nephew.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church, 3413 Mt. Holly Huntersville Road with Reverend T.J. Thompson officiating. Visitation will be held immediately following the service.
