Tom Powell died March 11, 2014, at The Haven at Carolina Place.
He was born in St. Louis, Mo. son of Harry Thomas and Ellnarose Behrens Powell on July 25, 1926. Tom came to Charlotte 60 years ago, compliments of Sunbeam Corp. After many years as a salesman, he received a Masters degree from Winthrop University and joyfully taught English and English Literature for 12 years at CPCC. Shortly after arriving in Charlotte, Tom became active in The Little Theatre of Charlotte and the Mint Museum's Golden Circle Theatre. For many years he volunteered at the NC Zoo in Asheboro and the Charlotte Nature Museum.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann and their six children: Kathryn Batts and her husband, Johnny, Thomas (Chip) and his wife, Sally, Betsy Compton and her husband, Jack, Marjorie, David and his, wife Diane, Susan Rivers; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, John Powell.
Memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Christ Lutheran Church in Charlotte, with Pastor Chris Hermansen, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 4519 Providence Road, Charlotte 28226, Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte 28204, or The Ivey 6039 Park South Drive, Charlotte 28210.
